Mackinac Island is 16 minutes away by ferry boat from Mackinaw City, Michigan. This island is unique in that they banned automobiles starting in 1898. The modes of transportation on the island include carriages and horses, bicycles, and walking. The historic and romantic ambience of the island made it the perfect site for the 1980 filming of "Somewhere In Time" at the Grand Hotel. This Victorian style hotel with a Grecian design was built in 1887 to accommodate summer visitors from nearby states since it was cooler on the island.

"Somewhere In Time" is a love story between a writer (played by Christopher Reeve) and an actress (Jane Seymour). Through self-hypnosis, the writer travels back in time and meets the 1912 actress at the Grand Hotel. The resulting love story may now be lost somewhere in time, but certainly lives in the minds of those who have seen and appreciated the movie and the idyllic but grand surroundings.
